Orbital Obsequy

Posted by Qais Fulton

spacetrailer.jpg

Much to-do has been made about Space Funerals, the honoring of loved ones that have mastered the mortal-coil shuffle through launching their lifeless husks (or the ashes of their lifeless husks) into space. And to be perfectly honest, as an admitted science fiction and space nerd aficionado, the idea has a certain appeal. Just imagine it, your cremains orbiting the planet to bask in the majesty of our big blue mound of dirt and water, or resting on the lunar surface to lazily spin in orbit and take part in the tugging of tides, or even better, simply hurtling through the vastness of space.

Sounds pretty doesn’t it? Well of course it does! We were all raised on this stuff, although to be fair we were raised on the idea that we’d be doing all these things while still living, but considering the deplorable rate of advancement into space it’s no surprise people are simply taking what they can get.

Twilight in the Roachfields (What I Did on My Summer Vacation)

Posted by Eliza Gauger

Picking up pets offworld was generally frowned upon by the Company, as there were no quarantine facilities beyond the Oort.

Foreign mammalia carried strange strains of crippling flu, shed itchy fibers on cockpit upholstery, and left crumbly little fewmets in secret places, fewmets that became apparent, and airborne, as soon as a ship hit ohgee.

Loneliness was somewhat alleviated, yes, but at the cost of vacation time squandered on bad worlds, stocking up on exotic feed.

Little Green Men

A Chinese website is claiming to have found photographic proof of aliens on Mars. The picture, found after thoroughly analyzing photos taken by NASA’S Mars Exploration Rover Spirit, seems to show a figure walking across the Martian landscape.

According to The Daily Mail, the internet has been “abuzz” with speculation as to what this may or may not be. Cries of “Proof!”, “Shopped!”, “Optical illusion!”, and “Bigfoot!” have been heard, echoing across the tubes. A larger, 43MB panoramic version can be found here.

Glirk

Posted by Qais Fulton

Any Ectomite worth their salt has seen Enemy Mine, hopefully numerous times. If you’ll remember, at one point Dennis Quaid knocks up his alien compatriot. Modern science is not only ignored but raped and left in a cold, dark room to die, and alien babies commence. It was as heartwarming as that kind of thing can be but not really amusing. If there’s one thing I need from Alien/Human miscegenation it’s humor. Watch as Glirk seduces Steve and Steve valiantly attempts not to projectile vomit.

Noise du Jour: “Knights of Cydonia” by Muse

Posted by Eliza Gauger

I have always taken issue with this video.

Sure, it’s “wacky”. The lead sports a 70’s porn moustache. There are cylons. The kung-fu sequence will have fauxstalgics nodding smugly, nostrils flared between highlighted wisps of their fashion mullets.

But it’s just not enough, damn it. If you’re going to mashup the epic cop-movie badness of Sabotage, and the hideous pre-Firefly space cheese of Oblivion, do not hold back. Go whole hog, or you’ve got nothing. Subtlety is lost here, and a video of this sort would have done well atop a springy loam of tongue-in-cheekiness. As is, it takes itself entirely too seriously, and never quite gets off the ground.

Great Moments in Losers: The “Win A Date With Michael” YouTube Contest

Posted by John Brownlee

The world is full of lonely hearts and it is good to step cautiously around them. They are like bloated, shell-less snails, and you take pity on the helpless things, feeling a strange amalgam between empathy and disgust. But every once and a while, you come across one that is just so utterly loathsome, an affront to sentient dignity, that your lips peel back in a grin to reveal twinkling eye teeth, and all you want to do is feel its jelly squick between your toes as you jump up and down on it, laughing maniacally and staring into the sun.
