Saturday Morning Comics: Achewood
Posted by Ross Rosenberg
While I understand my long absent editor’s disdain for the web-comic I do not share it. Yes, the internet is indeed littered with illustrated detritus, based upon the most inside or inside jokes and absurd non-sequiturs; the collective Finnegans Wake of the internet era. Still, there are some gems to be found, not least of which is Achewood. Chris Onstad’s long running strip detailing the adventures of Achewood’s residents is by turns surreal and mundane featuring everything from a cursed Volvo (owned by Trent Reznor in high school that fills all who ride in it with despair) to a massive spectacle known as the Great Outdoor Fight to, most recently, Williams-Sonoma pornography. The individual personalities of the characters are so fully realized that almost every one of them has their own blog. It’s a staggering body of work and one of the few comics that I check religiously and I highly recommend digging all the way through its archives. The reward is well worth the effort.

Yes, Achewood is quite brilliant. There are actually a few webcomics worth reading these days, you just have to separate the wheat from the crap.

KC Green’s Rumblo Is kinda hit or miss. I havent lost faith in the web comic. its just that there are millions of medoiocre people in the world, when you get a mediem that can support the random crap of billions of people you have to wade through the mind filth to find the gems of comedic genius
