When a new cephalopope is to be elected, the shoal of cardinals are sequestred in a cave. If a vote fails, black ink is released from a vent. When a vote is successful a cloud of biolumniscent bacteria are released instead.

Not just Cephalopope, but Floating Cyclopean Cephalopope. Easily confused with the common or garden Hovering Cephalobishop when the latter is viewed in profile.
