Andy Rooney Wants The Typewriter Back

Posted by Ross Rosenberg

Andy Rooney is, truly, one of my heroes. It has been my dream from a very young age to grow up a cantankerous old man, suspicious of all supposed “technological advances” and ready at all times with a withering diatribe with which to eviscerate the demons of all that is The Future. At the age of twenty-nine, I can say that I find myself right on track. Sixty and beyond is looking glorious.

That said, here is a clip of the intimidating Mr. Rooney comparing his many computers to his one, treasured Underwood and a nice story about how it took all the will power he possessed to not punch Bill Gates in the face for what he’s done to him and, by extension, everyone else.

Andy Rooney: Championing the people’s rights not to be confused by technology for a better yesterday, tomorrow.

I keep my trusty Remington typewriter on my desk, right next to my laptop. If I have to write anything important or meaningful, I use it as a matter of luddite’s preference. Still, wouldn’t go back to using it exclusively. I’m far too fond of Photoshop and the internet for that…

I often wonder what I would have done with my life if computers and video games weren’t available. Probably been a mountain man, living in a cabin with a long beard and a pipe.

Wow, that’s great! I’m literally in tears here! He’s like my grandma trying to program the microwave!

Computers aren’t typewriters, F you Bill Gates!

And get off of my lawn!

I bet before he found the start menu he tried yelling “OFF” at it a few times.

I can understand his frustration ,computers are logical and some people may be described as illogical. Its these people who computers frustrate the most and easiest. Although I will admit that Mr. Andrew did not have the luxury of practically being raised on computers like many members of my generation were. But an interesting clip nonetheless.

    - still, I wish a PC would last me 50 years - even as a word processor.

Typewriters? Ha! In our time we had to make do with smearing our blood and mucus on rough bark, and we enjoyed it! Editing was a pain, I’ll grant that.

I’m gonna say it. Andy Rooney is Lewis Black for the retirement fund and shuffleboard crowd. Which I suppose makes Oscar the Grouch Lewis Black for the gumming-the-coffee-table set.

    I agree, F Bill Gates!

On a Mac you select “Shut Down” from the Apple Menu and it [CARRIER LOST]

    Andy Rooney is epic lulz

I watched this and was prepared either to laugh at Andy Rooney or confront my own fuddy-duddiness. But what? You have to go through all that to turn of a PC? That’s ridiculous. He should get a Mac.

Given resource depletion and a credit crunch, in the long term it’s likely.

Three words for the cantankerous old badger we so love to hear gripe: Buy a Mac

HA! I saw this when it first aired back in 2004 or 5, and I wished others could see Rooney’s backasswards old man rant.
