Saturday Morning Cartoons XLVII: Turkey And Fixings

Posted by Ross Rosenberg

And by that I of course mean one Thanksgiving special followed by a group of random, animated detritus. Yes, this week is Thanksgiving — real, American Thanksgiving, not that cheap, Canadian imitation — the day on which we can all stuff ourselves with food until we collapse into a carbohydrate induced coma and after which we begin the long, arduous task of celebrating Christmas for a month.

Also, this is my six hundred and sixty sixth post. Coincidence? Who cares!?

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving: I’m of two minds when it comes to Charles Schultz’s creation in both print and on screen. Part of me loathes its saccharine sweet sentimentality and its trite, overtly Christian preaching and another part admires the man’s artistic and creative ability and the cartoons remain firmly fixed in my animated childhood memory. It is perhaps a testament to Peanuts that my usually dominant, cynical side uncharacteristically loses this particular battle.

Home Movies: “Curses”: I’ve touted my love for Home Movies before so all I will say is if you don’t like it you are insane or brain dead. In this episode our diminutive filmmakers explore the use of foul language and its humorous effects. Make sure to watch out for the hidden surprise right before the credits.

The Ren & Stimpy Show: The second episode — counting the pilot — featuring the adventures of everyone’s favorite dog and cat. Also featuring Log! I’m sure this will be pulled by the end o the day so get it while it’s hot.

Dexter’s Laboratory: “Opposites Attract”: Another show that rarely shows up on YouTube and will most surely be pulled. Not the best episode featuring Genndy Tartakovsky’s diminutive mad scientist, but you take what you can get.

Korgoth of Barbaria: Dear [adult swim], I’m writing to inquire as to what, exactly, is wrong with you. No really, I would like to know why you continue giving asshats like Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim money to churn out hours of retarded pap while shelving truly brilliant ideas like Korgoth of Barbaria. If you find men dressing in drag to be that funny, might I suggest you export your Tim & Eric stuff to England, it is my understanding that they too like that sort of thing. Afterwards, you can pull your heads out of your asses and start to produce more shows that are, you know, good. Regards, Ross Rosenberg

14 COMMENTS ARE NOT ENOUGH

I heartily concur with your sentiments toward adult swim re: Tim and Eric and the unbelievably childish crap they are actually paid to produce. Who on earth watches this horse shit?!

I, too, agree on the tim&eric v. Korgoth sentiment.

    but I LOVE Home movies.

    Thanks for the ‘toons.

    Your most brimstonian post yet.

I do not remember Homes Movies being that…late-night. Something like that. That was awesome.

James - This episode is from the fourth and final season. Armed with the knowledge that they would be done at the end of it, Brendan Small and company just went nuts with the stories and dialogue, giving it a far racier tone than the three seasons that preceded it.

As much as I loved all of those shows, why would you ever post the newer Dexter’s laboratory? They sucked compared to the first run of the show.

None of the shows that came from the one-off cartoons Cartoon Network did back in the day were as good as the one-off cartoons that earned them their spot. The original pilot tunes for Dexter, and Power Puff Girls and even Johnny Bravo were hilarious, unique, and entertaining. The resulting shows not so much. Although of those 3, Dexter does hold up pretty well.

I had seen briefly in commercials those Home Movies characters, but never gave it a shot until now. (I didn’t even know the premise of the show or the title, which shows how ineffective those commercials were on me.) I see some of the voice actors are from Dr. Katz, plus it often has the same improvised feel to the dialogue.

Korgoth is pretty great. The classification part of my brain wants to group the animation style together with Superjail, but I can’t quite put my finger on why.

First off, the Charlie Brown special has, at the end, the most interesting piece of cannibalism with Snoopy and Woodstock chowing down on a Thanksgiving turkey. Now, considering that both Woodstock and the turkey are avians, is that truly a form of cannibalism even though they are different species? Hrmmm, maybe I’ll ahve to stuff my woman and eat her for Thanksgiving, just to give it a try. ;-D

Lastly, amen Ross, your sentiments regarding Korgoth are not only well founded but utterly astute. I find most of Adult Swim’s toon line up repulsive and intolerable. Korgoth would have been the coup de grace of their line up, along with Metalocalypse, Family Guy, Robot Chicken, and a few others, of course.

Thanks for this wonderful animated set!

@epheros- I don’t think so, I mean we eat monkeys right? No cannibalism there.

as far as Adult swim I have to agree with the unanimity here. The only explanation I can offer is that the shows are so cheap to make, cheaper than Korean animation, cheaper than flash animation, cheaper than buying canceled one season shows from 10 years ago that were on mtv or comedy central, that it doesn’t matter if only a few people too stoned to be physically capable of changing the channel watch it because it would still be more profitable with so few production costs.

Speaking of a places that sometimes play anime on a whim, has Demonbane ever made it to the Saturday morning cartoons? Its an anime based on an erotic game where most of the characters are Lovecraftian inspired. Brilliant concept, my only complaint is it wasn’t very good.

Korgoth of Barbaria, alas that I never knew you while when you were fresh and unspoilt! Never mind the filth, the shambling, corpse-like derelicts or constant buzzing of the flies of your heyday. You are beautiful still and I would like to lay eggs in your abdomen.

    Call me.
