Mechanical Orifices

Photos taken during the construction of the the Large Hadron Collider, located on the border of Switzerland and France. The bowels of the facility are dazzling in their complexity and scale. This wire-rimmed sphincter is the “CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment Tracker Outer Barrel (TOB)”.

I can’t help but imagine this as the cross section of some sort of future warp drive. I have an image of opening the door to the engine room in my spaceship, only to see this techno-mandala, each of the concentric circular sections rotating in different directions and at different speeds, and lights glowing and flashing along its length to the center.

Ok, so as a resident Floridian I have to say that the picture you have here of this thing looks an awful lot like the shrink ray on the ride at Epcot center for Body Wars.
Check it out, (@ 133) Disney always knows what’s happenin’.

@Mike: Oh, wow…
But yeah, I’m looking forward to when they fire this thing up. Might finally blast a hole in string theory that can’t be patched up…

@Robert, I’m the same man - really can’t wait until they turn this on. Though it’ll be some time before they do the extra special stuff apparently..

Can’t stop staring at the center…being drawn in…the voices in my head telling me to….
Nice post!

why would we want a hole in string theory? Physicists have to have something to be optimistic about, right?
