A Murder
Posted by Qais Fulton
There is a small cabal of crow devotees along the West coast that count several EctoEditors among their number. You can tell who they are easily enough. The sacks of bread-heels and dog-treats stuffed into pockets and trailing crumbs are a dead giveaway. The occasional full-stop, moon-eyed, staring into the sky might seem like the local weirdo’s weekly fugue state, but maybe they’re just watching the antics of a group of jousting adolescent corvids.
If you’re lucky enough to have a few near your home, try tossing out the occasional treat. It won’t be long before soot-winged minions swoop menacingly over your mountaintop lair, rattling across the bones of your fallen enemies in search of necrotizing morsels as a warning to all that would disturb your uneasy peace.

One of the biggest thrills I had at the beginning of last summer was when I discovered that my neighborhood (and many others in the vicinity of the L.A. “River”) is a natural habitat for ravens. Not just crows but motherfucking honest-to-god RAVENS. I still smile when I hear them clacking and croaking from the telephone poles above my bedroom.

I’m more of a turkey vulture kind o’ guy. They hang around in the trees down the block. 6 ft. wingspans and very hungry eyes. Very ccol!

I’ve always loved the crows, since I was a kid.
Good thing too as the last four or five places I’ve lived all seem to be near that highest tree in the neighbourhood where the crows love to hang out.

Gah, harbingers of nothing but evil. Give me ravens instead. Nothing beats waking up to that caw in the forest to know you’re truly alone in the middle of nowhere. Such smart birds too, seen them open up bags, and other “sealed” things to get at the delights inside.

I tried to talk to a French dude about ravens once, and he didn’t know what I was talking about. He said in French they just call them big crows. Any independent verification on this?

Ravens and Crows are both corvids, but there is a broad spectrum of very different, yet somewhat similar, birds in that family. It ultimately depends on the region, as corvids differ quite a bit from area to area.

I hate crows, they’re all out to get me. Just a few days ago I was attacked by a couple of huge ones; I had to duck and run.
