Saturday Morning Cartoon Request Line

Posted by Eliza Gauger

Dear airborne apes, tomorrow is Ross’ turn on the old cartoon crank, meaning we need some audience participation: recommendations for cartoons you love and/or lust after, with links if possible (but vague descriptions or titles are okay too). Post here and prevent repeats!

I’ll love you guys forever if you’re able to turn up a video of Lazar, the short from the late 80’s. It’s on an out-of-print videotape, but I haven’t been able to turn it up elsewhere. There’s a brief description at http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=950DE5D7173FF936A2575AC0A96F948260

P.S. I’ll probably love you forever regardless. I’m easy.

all of “A mouse and his child” is on U tube. It is something so wonderful and oddly not on dvd at the moment. Othere than that try the anime “I want to be an angel” (tenshi something or other) it is wacky, and the theme song will grab your your head.

The Tale of How by the Blackheart Gang:

Better quality version at their site:

A musical short with tentacles and dodos. It’s pretty hip.

May I suggest Battle Programmer Shirase:

I think you’ll find it has several qualities and veins of humor near and dear to the Ectopeeps’ black little hearts.

Invader Zim: Tak, the hideous new girl

    Aeon Flux — Gravity

I think an old Simpsons short from the very beginning would make a nice interlude. (Anything other than ‘good night’.) How about ‘The Pagans’?

    More interludes:

I second the motion for Rocko’s Modern Life. Preferably one with that great polemic of the modern man Mr. Bighead. The exceptional depiction of the rat race found in the Magic Meatball episode or the cutting commentary on closeted queers in the workplace on display in Closet Clown are both prime examples of what I’m talking about. Chris Ware’s work for American Life is another sublime choice. With the looming completion FLCL on the horizon, may I humbly submit another surreal anime OVA with an air of Steam Punk class to it? That’s right, Read or Die. I believe that would be our glorious ectoplasmic cephelopod of an inter-dimensional pagan idol’s Saturday morning cartoon of choice. Can’t you just picture him sitting down in his pajamas watching a bookworm with super paper craft discover her wild sapphic passion for the phasing clone of Mata Hari, laughing with mad glee as he devours the souls and minds of countless artists whose lives have been spent bringing forth his power into the cultural zeitgeist?

C.O.P.S.: Fighting Crime in a Future Time!

This anti-drug episode is pretty lulzy:

    Intro: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ye_VY-Ewh2M
    Part 1: http://youtube.com/watch?v=LkvGxkydFgw
    Part 2: http://youtube.com/watch?v=vhewEOGwzJU

Maybe the best intro music in Saturday morning cartoon history.

Might I ask, A Bump in the Night, Science Court, Space Ghost, and some old Bugs Bunny, all good suggestions I think.

This is why I go into cold sweats when I see those Outback Steakhouse commercials. It’s from “Dot and the Kangaroo”, and old Australian cartoon about a young girl who goes into the Bush accompanied by a red kangaroo. Then it takes this turn into Willy Wonka Boat Ride territory.

I made this. It’s not very good, but if an audience for it exists, it’s probably here.

Another bit of Saturn’s day fodder, making fiends found here: http://www.makingfiends.com/ An odd and demented yet child like animation. I’ve watched the whole set but I believe it would be appreciated by the other denizens of this site.

Pinky and the Brain and Freakazoid would be good. Also Rocko. And Doug. And ROD is just mental. In fact, everything so far is pretty great. Here are some more suggestions.

Visionaries is always good. A Post-apocalyptic magical future where you have knights in armour change into animals, fly quasi-magical jet-fighters and summon massive demonic creatures who can rip apart castles? Nice. Also, one of the best damn opening themes in the ’80s cartoon lineup.

Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors is… odd. Good guys on quest for magic root VS mutant vegetables who can transform into cars with buzzsaws. Mutant vegetables with clone armies who travel the galaxy on interstellar plant vines. I am not making this up.

Gargoyles (1994-7). Heroic Flying monsters which turn to stone during the day are cursed, re-appear a thousand years later in modern day New York. Search youtube for “Gargoyles 1-1-1″ for first episode - the following sections are in the related videos box

The Bruce Timm/Paul Dinni Batman series, especially any of the ones featuring Mark Hamill as the Joker.

Tex Avery is always worth watching. So are all the classic Warner Brothers shorts. Anything with Marvin the Martian especially “you have made me very angry… very angry indeed!”

    Achi-wa ssipak (2006)
    Deeply strange, very violent.
groonk.net/blog for March 27 has the bit I’ve seen

Not really a cartoon, but the cut-scenes from “The Neverhood Chronicles” (claymation awesomeness) and “Abe’s Exoddus” make me laugh.

Don’t remember if has come up already, but “The Adventures of Mark Twain” (1985) is full to brim with memorable moments. The segment featuring the opera masked Stranger who creates a tiny world of homonculi is especially brain-searing. Search youtube for “very creepy, disturbing children’s cartoon, banned from TV”

    The Cat Came Back (1989)
    Director: Cordell Barker
    Producer: Richard Condie
    http://www.spike.com/video/2908897
Has been going around and around in my head since I was a mere spawnling. One of my favourite cartoons.

    Oh, and finally…

    The Sandman (1992):Short film -
Directed and animated by Paul Berry.
    Batty Berry Mackinnon - 1992
    Music by Colin Towns
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjgHbRrnjhU

If I were to call it “The Nightmare before Christmas” crossed with “The Cat with Hands”, you’d get the idea of what this is about. Sweet dreams everyone…

Cartoon series: The Mysterious Cities of God Great 35-27 episode series with a beginning middle and end. Strong Character development, great Historical fiction, and a completely believable sci-fi twist towards the end. Check it out, I know many episodes are available via YOUTUBE in minute segments. I’m sure you can find full episodes at sites like WWW.eztv.it
Check it out they don’t make stories like this anymore
