GET DOWN!

Some pages from a 1950s pamphlet entitled “Protection from the ATOMIC BOMB” which outlines the proper procedures when a nuclear cataclysm occurs. This is easily my favorite page. Indeed I was previously unaware that, should I witness a flash of light brighter than the Sun, I should immediately do a face-plant and stay down for one minute because really, once your retinas have been seared by an atomic explosion, there’s not much else to do. After that one minute though, you should be able to get up and go about your business, safe in the knowledge that you’re too smart for those Communists.

My dad told me about how when he was in school they had to crouch under their desks for Atomic Bomb safety drills.

STAY THERE FOR AT LEAST A MINUTE
Classic.
At least we’ve graduated to “If you smell almonds, JAM these in to the meat of your thigh!”

Seriously. Remember: duct tape and garbage bags people!

[…] These pages from a 1950s propaganda pamphlet really need to be mashed-up with some fine dance moves. Get to it, internet. […]

What’s scary is that the people publishing these knew this was a crock of poo and they said it to the public anyway. Fast forward a few years and how’s that duck ‘n cover stuff look?

Heh. I have to laugh. I live within a 5 mile zone for nuclear accidents. Used to live within the 2 mile zone (aka Kiss Your Ass Goodbye zone)… Here, in the 5 mile area, we MAY get out, but we’ll be irradiated…
Now, they tell us to shut all the doors, seal off the windows (such as with terrorist attacks or bio attacks) and … wait. Just… wait. They’ll come by and tell us what to do (bunny suits and Geiger counters anyone?)

Part of the defense strategy named MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) was to convince everyone on both sides that any nuclear exposure meant certain death.
This was very useful and kept the wold at peace for quite a while. Clearly, if the superpowers engaged in all out thermonuclear combat, everyone would perish.
But the threat today is more likely to be an isolated, small weapon attack. If you are close to “ground zero” you will be vaporized and not see a “flash brighter than the sun” (my Dad witnessed an atomic explosion and also described it that way). If you DO SEE one, then the advice in the article is probably valid.
Watch some of the early bomb testing films. There is an initial photon blast which knocks off paint and tree bark. Then a secondary concussion blast that wipes out everything that’s standing. It would suck to be far enough away to survive the initial radiation, only to be shredded by flying glass.
Regarding radiation exposure, it certainly not as deterministic as you may believe. Some people get unexpected cancer from small “safe doses” while other people survive exposures 1,000 times more that “lethal.”
Wikipedia has a decent article on the Chernobyl accident which gives a better idea of variability.

With a whimper,
not a flash,
our end will arrive.

Mogo grew up in the Fifties, and remembers this training well. Darren is quite right. The training wasn’t stupid. If you can get through the initial burst without major injury, you have a chance of surviving the fires and fallout that follow. Until around 1970, the USSR probably couldn’t have hit us with more than about 20 warheads. That’s not enough to end civilization, although it might have slowed down the evolution of disco music.
