Noise du Jour: “Omstart” By Cornelius

Posted by Ross Rosenberg

Feeling lethargic on this fine Friday morning I had the good fortune to come across this new video for “Omstart” by Keigo Oyamada a.k.a. Cornelius. Calling this mellow would be an understatement and in many ways the song is almost a backdrop for the simplistic, yet highly effective visuals. All in all, it fit my mood perfectly.

Bong-Ra Live in SF Tonight: Free Octobees to All Ectomites!

Posted by E. G. Gauger

bongra_front_final_bleed_we.jpg

Same deal as last time, gentlemen: you find me in the heaving crowd, I’ll do you up an Octobee, on the house. (clue: my hair is mintyblonde, and I will be dressed as a biplane-hijacking escapee from Mad Max’s personal bellydancing troupe)

This is Bong-Ra’s first US tour, and he’s augmented by a lineup of excellence including Pneumatic Detach, and Enduser, craftsman of one of my and Qais’ all-time favorite albums, Bollywood Breaks.

Ectofriend DJ Intoner, who put the show together, will be spinning between sets.

In case you, my treasured readership, are not yet familiar with Bong-Ra, allow me to advance the notion that he is fucking insane:

As for the rest of the cast, just click your dainty pointers below to be bathed in the relevant phat beats.

The Legend Of Jimbles: The Champion Is Risen

Posted by Qais Fulton

jmmmmmmmmmmmn-copy.jpg

Those Alpha-Centauri cluster bastards didn’t know who they were messing with when they absconded with little Jimbles McGüllohanie. You see, Little Jimbles was the latest in a long line of abductees, a paternal legacy of ending up on the business end of an alien probe worn smooth as a riverbed stone by centuries of scientific investigation.

It’s no surprise then that he was hell-bent on being the first man in his family to go his whole life without suffering the indignity of obscene extraterrestrial curiosity; it was his only ambition from the very moment he’d learned his family’s dark secret. The day those space hopping fuckers stole his dream from him (and subsequently his anal virginity) they spelled their own doom. As you can see by his brutal arsenal of alien destruction, Jimbles aims to take his vengeance through the skin.

Cthulhu Cthursday: 365 Days Of Blasphemous Horrors

Posted by Qais Fulton

001-b-breach.JPG

Earlier this week, Weird Tales and oft adored Ectomo favorite Steven Archer began a year long art project that is certain to end in non-euclidean tragedy. Each day, Weird Tales will reveal a new Lovecraftian piece created by Steven — all of which are for sale at obscenely low rates — ending the project once the Earth has completed its annual drunken wobble ’round the Sun.

While I’d love to see this project completed it seems unrealistic not to expect some kind of massive psychological break resultant from spending each day rendering the various visages of creatures that inhabit the noplace between worlds. On day 360 I’m blowing town for the arctic. A five day head start should be just enough time to get out of the path of the octo-godlet that, even now, grows inside poor Steven’s head.

Your Daily WTF: Los Simpsons

Posted by Ross Rosenberg

From the Spanish television series Cruz y raya.com comes “Los Simpsons”, a skit in which the comedy duo paint themselves yellow, slap giant fake eyes on their faces, and pretend to be Homer and Marge Simpson. The effect is, shall we say, less than comedic.

Some examples from a British game, circa 1940, called “Vacuation”; the object of which was to “complete evacuation by discarding every card in the hand.” The packaging reads:

Vacuation
TOPICAL AND FASCINATING
BRITISH MADE
THE GAME OF THE MOMENT
A GAME FOR ALL AGES.

Fun for the whole family!

Ecthomo: Laura Zindel Ceramics

Posted by Qais Fulton

zindel.JPG

As a child I always wondered why adults were content with the boring dishware that seemed to fill each and every one of their kitchen cabinets. Slurping soup I’d imagine the poorly painted pilgrims dotting the rim of my mother’s dish set engaged in bloody battle with savage natives.

Soup time was always a little weird with my family.

Thankfully, artist Laura Zindel has everything you’ll need to inject a little oddity into your own murder-fantasy/dinnertime. A wide array of bug, bird, and beast adorned crockery is available on her site, which while not featuring any Octopi that I could spy, do have a healthy selection of bee-based works to appease our wrathful Octobee.

A Murder

Posted by Qais Fulton

crows.JPG

There is a small cabal of crow devotees along the West coast that count several EctoEditors among their number. You can tell who they are easily enough. The sacks of bread-heels and dog-treats stuffed into pockets and trailing crumbs are a dead giveaway. The occasional full-stop, moon-eyed, staring into the sky might seem like the local weirdo’s weekly fugue state, but maybe they’re just watching the antics of a group of jousting adolescent corvids.

If you’re lucky enough to have a few near your home, try tossing out the occasional treat. It won’t be long before soot-winged minions swoop menacingly over your mountaintop lair, rattling across the bones of your fallen enemies in search of necrotizing morsels as a warning to all that would disturb your uneasy peace.

Death Of A Cellphone

What happens when you put a cellphone in a microwave? To a Luddite like myself who retains a healthy distrust and aversion to mobile communication the results are unsurprising.

The Not-So-Distant Bio-Future

Posted by Qais Fulton

With Parliament defending their recent vote allowing for the creation of human-animal hybrid embryos for scientific study, the future takes one step closer to the noisome, unsettling din we all eagerly anticipate. It won’t be long before that kind of strange bio-tech has wriggled its way into (semi) polite society the same way all far-out tech has trickled down into common usage.

First thing in the morning you’ll slap your wall-screen to life so that the beast-women of the world can preach the gospel of a new, better, psuedo-you. All followed by an advertising parade for genetic remapping agents so gratuitous and glossy in its hustle it would make the advertising execs of today weep. If you’re lucky maybe some seizure-inducing cartoons right after.

God damn I can’t wait for the future.

Moustache Monday: A Daily Occurrence

Posted by Ross Rosenberg

It wasn’t just the noise that bothered Mr. Whittingham; it was also the fact that, almost without fail, his next door neighbors felt the need to wax their cats in the evening, greatly diminishing his ability to concentrate on the business section.
