Posted by Eliza Gauger

anonymous_support_ribbon.jpgTomorrow at 11AM, all over the planet, Anonymous mobilizes.

Purpose: to protest, in person, the Church of Scientology’s abuse of human beings, manipulation of law and public opinion, and general shitting-up of the Internet.

30 COMMENTS ARE NOT ENOUGH

    Hail, Xenu!

    Comment by Sharky — February 10, 2008 @ 2:03 am

Recording the story of Xenu, and having it play, constantly, on loudspeaker, might be useful, as well.

This whole Anonymous business continues to grate on my palate. Not that I don’t find Scientology and its thralls excorable, but Anonymous themselves seems guilty of a similar kind of groupthink. Right now they may be on the side of angels, but it’s a slippery slope when you indulge hate.

    Comment by License Farm — February 10, 2008 @ 5:27 am

Anonymous is evil. They’d happily agree, I think. This makes me think of that bit in Jurassic Park where the T-Rex and the velociraptors have a fight. But I’m drunk, so I can’t help but find most things reminding me of that bit in Jurassic Park where the T-Rex and the velociraptors have a fight.

I agree. Most of the greater truths can be witnessed in the fighting of t-rex and velociraptors. That is why god had to kill them all.

    Comment by Hlaode — February 10, 2008 @ 3:02 pm

ITT, we discuss evil, and do nothing about it.

    Comment by Pat — February 10, 2008 @ 5:32 pm

Wow. Ectomo supports Project Chanology, huh? Do you also support their rampant homophobia and other hate speech (the kind so flippantly, casually used on the internet that it is becoming a disgusting “norm”)? Or their complete willingness to target not just institutions or organizations that displease them, but private individuals as well?

Scientology is bad. Okay, I’ll buy that. The rest? Well…I wouldn’t put *my* name behind it.

    Comment by revston — February 10, 2008 @ 5:45 pm

The affair here in Portland, OR today went pretty well. At its peak, the count was at 105 protesters. As is tradition in Portland, the crowd wasn’t exactly diverse – I’d say about 80% white nerds, 10% white christians and about 10% white christian nerds. Lotsa gamer-types: skinny people with trench coats, long hair; but sans staffs (clearly left at home so as to not provoke any confrontations – confrontations are kryptonite for nerds).

The words “fag” and “faggot” were thrown around a couple of times by minority of losers – that’s no good… We need to be careful about these psychos… I’ve seen it on some anti-scientology sites before (not actually affiliated with Project Chanology as was suggested in a comment above). It’s hard to control what kind of jerks are going to grab onto any cause in the beginning — it’s the nature of, well, everything — if you dig deeper, you’ll see that the founders of Chanology aren’t saying anything derogatory about anyone (aside from the people who run CoS)… There are commenters who are saying some shitty things on their site, but that seems to be about it. To my dismay, I saw that if you google Project Chanology, the “Encyclopedia Dramatica” comes up most prominently – these people seem to have more of a problem with homosexuality and atheism than they do even with scientology… I don’t want to be associated with these clowns. I wish I knew more about the interwebs so I could poop these guys out of the bowels of the cause. Anyway – here’s the flickr from today in Portland:

I saw some video cams and fancy microphones, so there should be some other stuff getting posted elsewhere soon…

EEK! I get it — I just clicked the link from your posting, Eliza (I failed to do that before I opened my trap) — it leads to that horrible Encyclopedia Dramatica site — I see why revston got that idea — fix it, Eliza, fix it fix it fix it! (unless, of course, you hates the faggots — in which case, I guess it is your house and all…)

    Comment by uncle ass — February 10, 2008 @ 6:56 pm

    just kidding, by the way

    Comment by uncle ass — February 10, 2008 @ 7:19 pm

Encyclopedia Dramatica the website aside, does not Project Chanology arise from the “Anonymous” and 4chan…um, phenomena? The name itself is a reference to 4chan. “Anonymous,” as I understood it, arose from /b/ on 4chan, right?

That being said, “Project Chanology” might (*might*) be a great concept, but to so totally embrace and link itself to those things — which, again with the ED website aside, *absolutely* cater to and support willful ignorance, hatespeech and, to borrow from License Farm’s earlier reference, groupthink — seriously undermines any validity it might otherwise claim. And again, is quite seriously something I wouldn’t want *my* name associated with.

    Or my “Anonymous” self.

    Comment by revston — February 10, 2008 @ 9:02 pm

If you think /b/ is genuinely homophobic or hateful, you don’t read enough Jerkcity.

“faggot” is the “nigga” of the internet. Every faction of Anonymous was referred to, internally, as “[name of city]fags”. For example, those mobilizing in Seattle were called Seafags. Those in San Francisco, Sanfags.

    And Scientologists are Scifags.

Welcome to the new internet, gentlemen. Where we ridicule the things we love, and the things we hate, in equal measure.

As for your name, associate it with whatever you wish. Even “stick up the ass”. It suits you.

    Comment by Eliza Gauger — February 10, 2008 @ 9:34 pm

ahh — subtext… shitty, underdeveloped right brain has failed me again…

    Comment by uncle ass — February 10, 2008 @ 10:52 pm

If “faggot” really is the “nigga” of the internet, it seems to me that the use of the word by anyone who isn’t gay could still be interpreted as extremely offensive. In addition to that, the use of the term “nigga” has recently come under harsher criticism from members within the black community, including *gasp* some of them there rapper fellows. True, “faggot” won’t ever have quite as bad of a negative connotation, what without the years of history being used to keep an entire race of people down, lynchings, grotesque hate crimes etc.

However, I do understand Eliza’s point and to be honest, am not entirely sure myself where I stand on this type of issue. On one hand, I can see how continuing to make hate speech an issue only serves to perpetuate it, and language is only as powerful as the meaning you choose to invest in it. On the other, you ignore history at your own peril.

Wait am I still talking about the same thing as you guys? The wine has kicked in and I’m not really sure anymore. In any case, I’ve been watching this whole phenomenon with great interest, and can’t wait to see more pics from the US side of things.

    NiggaFags, Please!

    Comment by Sharky — February 11, 2008 @ 1:10 am

Why are they attacking Scientology & not some other religion which is a bit more dangerous & has influence over more people?

    Comment by Evil Jim — February 11, 2008 @ 1:16 am

Because it’s too late to protest Christianity. We should have done that two thousand years ago.

    For Scientology, there’s still time.

    Comment by Eliza Gauger — February 11, 2008 @ 1:56 am

    Hmmm…insulted by Eliza. But:

“Welcome to the new internet, gentlemen. Where we ridicule the things we love, and the things we hate, in equal measure.”

Is it a marriage proposal, then? I’m confused.

It’s interesting, because I am — and I promise you this — one of the least “stick up my ass” people you would EVER meet. I guess I should just “relax” or something? Because I object to the fact that hate speech is made common and even apologized for?

Those things aside, why such a personal attack? Because I dared to disagree? And I didn’t even do that, really — it was more an expression of concern, originally. I guess I wasn’t sure that Ectomo was completely clear with whom they were associating themselves. I guess that it wasn’t “Ectomo,” but “Eliza” — and she was. Fine. More power to you.

I stand corrected, chastised, and censured. You shall hear no more from me on this subject. I apologize if I made your crusade seem…less fun, or something.

    Comment by revston — February 11, 2008 @ 2:23 am

Listen, man, seriously. Settle down, okay? Throwing around words like “hate speech”, and putting “relax” in quotes, really just underscores your misunderstanding the issue entirely, and your inability to actually relax. Hate speech should absolutely be defended, especially when it’s sarcastic, a joke, and being used to prove a point.

You DO, and I mean this in the nicest possible way, have a stick up your ass.

If you had bothered to look into the meaning of these protests, or stop to muse on the pairing of primate and angel in the manifestations of Anonymous, the flippant righteousness of their behavior might make more sense to you.

This is bigger than you think. It’s not a bunch of dumb kids playing at having a cause. And at the same time, that’s exactly what it is. Anonymous’ protests, and their very sincere belief in right and wrong (which exists exactly superimposed on their amorality), is only underscored by the sardonic quality of the delivery.

I think you have some reading to do, to be frank. Start here: http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=129289

    Oh, wait.

rules one and two… horribly broken. <sigh> i will spare all the various layered ironies and such… just wanted to weigh in; it really can /b/e summed up quite nicely: Anonymous is legion. Anon never forgives, and Anon never forgets.

Also, Anon forgives. (in b4 Almost-chan)

there’s a great (de)motivational floating around out there with the caption “Cold Reading - is cold”; it really sums up nicely the pansexual, anarchist, somewhat-sociopathic, mostly-intelligent zeitgeist that is Anonymous: the “(x)fags” who thrash on teh gheys one minute, then post their love for Linetrap in EPIC threads (balls occasionally touching for great justice?).

i suppose all that’s a “thank you for getting it,” Eliza (not that i ever expected any less from our hostess). if only we could get some of the stick up the arse folk to lighten up, they might better understand. meh - not awake enough, and this isn’t my forum, after all. i’ll leave it to you guys to explain to the Philistines.

“This is bigger than you think. It’s not a bunch of dumb kids playing at having a cause. And at the same time, that’s exactly what it is.”

Someone else who apparently has a stick up his ass here. It in fact is not any bigger than I think. It is kids playing at having a cause. That is all. Sure, nobody likes the target, and that makes it easier to accept. There has been shit like this before, only nobody really cared because the target was small potatoes. Anonymous is bullshit plain and simple. So what if it is bullshit I agree with?

Hey, spooky video on Youtube! Hey, protests in major cities, where almost a hundred people show up!!!!11! Dude!

Scientology is not going anywhere. Not today, anyway, and not because a bunch of virgin nerd boys take a break from their porn to jack-off on something else for a while.

And as for it being too late to protest Christianity, why’s that? It didn’t start 2000 years ago - that’s myth, like Xenu is myth.

The only way to get rid of this shit is to educate people overall, in schools, about science. Enough of that, and eventually religion will fall away. Dancing in front of a building does nothing.

“The only way to get rid of this shit is to educate people overall, in schools, about science. Enough of that, and eventually religion will fall away. Dancing in front of a building does nothing.”

Nice idea.. but you overestimate the intelligence of the masses.

Just think how smart the average person is, then remember that 50% of the planet is less intelligent than that. I’m not saying that the belief in a god or whatever is something for the ignorant and stupid, but religion however, is. And unfortunately it will be here to stay.

    Comment by rhys — February 11, 2008 @ 12:58 pm

Oh, and just something else I’ve been thinking about..

I may be wrong, but as I understand it, one of the main selling points of religion is that it gives hope to those terrified of death [ironically to the point where they’ll die for their god]. This fact alone tells me that it is impossible to be rid of religion in the world.

So after realising the futility of it all, I’m totally in support of these Anonymous guys. If I’d been able to afford a train to the protest in Manchester (UK) I’d have some photos of my own to send in. If we can’t educate or liberate people from religious oppression, the least we can do is make it slightly more troublesome for money-grabbing terrorists like the Church of Scientology.

(I think that might be the first time I’ve ever used the word ‘terrorist’ and meant it..)

    Comment by rhys — February 11, 2008 @ 1:10 pm

    Wow! peoples be gettin upset.

So here’s the thing — if you want to accomplish anything in the real world , you keep the chan-speak off the streets — major point: unfortunately, there’s a difference between the way things should be and the way things are. If you really want to stop the CoS, you don’t yell “FAG!” at them (I know, this isn’t exactly the way it happens each time but this the perception of the unknowing passerby who is trying to understand the signs and the masks). Whatever your meaning, your point is lost. Your argument eats itself. You have educated no one.

There is a tiny segment of the population that lives on the /b/ enough to understand scifag, portfag, poopfag, etc. It’s fun to be exclusive, and all, but everyone else on the street is either going to be turned off to the message or simply see it as hateful ad hominem. Maybe a couple of them will figure it out, but most people won’t dig deep enough (and neither will the media — another inconvenient reality). If you want to educate people you have to speak their language — sad but true.
Most of the chan-types seem to get this — for those of you that do, educate the ones who don’t before they fuck the whole thing up.

Unless, of course, the point is simply to nurture absurdity. If so, then great! So long as that’s the only point.

I will respond to myself for anyone who might somehow have a problem with the above by invoking Lo Pan: “Shut up Mr Burton! You were not brought upon this world to /get it/!”

    Comment by uncle ass — February 11, 2008 @ 7:07 pm

Well, the fag stuff WAS kept off the street. That was a major part of the marching orders, pre-protest: do not assault the public with memes. There were some dorks who brought their memes, especially in Hollywood apparently, but in any political movement there will be those who are there for the party and not for the politics. In SF our goal was to talk plainly about the evil of the CoS, and that’s what we did. Politely, strongly, and with clearly-worded flyers and conversations. There were catchphrases floating around between the protestors, quietly, but that was a safety measure to weed out scieno spies.

Did you see the latest : Bunker brags about criminal friends on video!!!

The creep even names them, and he teaches raw recruits how to avoid being jailed as part of Anonymous activities!

Guys Anonymous is a dead duck.
