Ariana Page Russel suffers from a condition called dermotographia, which causes her body to exhibit extreme hypersensitivity via an immune response. Any time Ariana’s skin is lightly scratched or irritated hives and welts spring up in the irritated area, usually lasting around a half hour.
Where some might find this an annoyance to be dealt with or ignored, Ariana utilizes her condition as an artistic medium, scratching patterns and writing into her skin, then photographing the often beautiful result. Ariana Page Russel, by dint of her innovative creativity, is the very definition of a Deviant Artist.

That is bad ass. My friend dated another girl with that condition, I remember it being vaguely described in a denny’s with a fork. now I am kicking myself for not seeing this potential.

Ive got the same thing…problem is that most people have a response of “what happened to you!”. It is a neat party trick tho, to write the name of someone on your arm and have it appear before their eyes. I’m glad someone used this for art. Not that I’m going to try any time soon.

I had this same condition when I was young …never thought of it as and art form…I as an “old” woman have out grown the hives…but still love the art…BEAUTIFUL!!!

Wow– I had this condition for a couple of weeks as part of an allergic reaction and I did the same thing! I freaked my friends out by writing their names and doodles all over my arms, and some people thought they were weird scars or something. I never would’ve thought to photograph it, though… very cool.

“Self mutilation” nothing! It’s an elegant solution to what I would imagine to be a very annoying involuntary response.

this isnt mutilation…it is taking a condition of the body and making something beutiful from it. to call it mutilation would be to demean the whole concept. bravo i say…bravo

self mutilation would be if she cut and scarred the words into herself… I think it is looks like a form of altered art. Cool!

I have the same condition, the itching that comes with the hives is enough to keep me from intentionally writing on my skin. It was a cool party trick for a little while but it’s much more annoying that it is cool.
