Noise du Jour: “Coin Operated Boy” by The Dresden Dolls
Posted by Qais Fulton
In continuation of this week’s Robot theme:
I’ve had several female friends express a melancholy empathy with this song. What woman wouldn’t want a strapping young lad in perpetual stasis hanging about at the back of her closet; eagerly anticipating the clink and twist of a quarter in the coin slot?
I come from the opposite end of the spectrum yet understand all too well myself. When the dust finally falls from ill-used servos and life begins to flicker in the eyes of the coin op chattel it’s back to the closet. The life of a coin operated boy is one of idle pining punctuated by brief moments of furious passion, and I’d have it no other way.

That’s a perfect description of my “existence”—Idare not call it a “life.” However, I wish it were any other way.
Nonetheless, that’s my favorite Dresden Dolls song for a reason. :)

I could have sworn this song was about vibrators.

When was the last time you saw a vibrator with a coin slot?

I think it’s for the human equivalent of vibrators. Let me tell you, manhood can’t be realized in its truest form if you haven’t been used/ felt like that.
And I think that something similar applies for women using men for such purposes.
Ah, relationships. So much simpler if coin-operated.

The end of that video is so tenderly sad. I interpret it as the used boy daring to express some real affection for his mistress, who flinches.
