Calling All Ectomites: Help Us Get Neuroscience Nymph A Scholarship
Posted by John Brownlee
Shelley Batts is the sultry scientific minx over at Retrospectacle, a neuroscience blog. And she needs Ectomo’s help to win a scholarship.
Full disclosure: I have a bit of a crush on Shelley. Not only does she possess a luscious pair of ripe, jiggling brain melons (like the ones you might see if you peeled back the scalp of a virgin angel), but she has the most entertaining neuroscience blog on the Internet and an African Grey.
Now, neuroscience isn’t usually my thing: I’m a trepanation kind of guy myself. But Retrospectacle is a must-read for any Ectomite. Here’s an example of the kind of posts Shelley does over there:
• Science Vault: Monkey to Human Testicle Transplant
• Science Vault: How Much LSD Does It Take to Kill an Elephant
• Science Vault: Coffee As Treatment For the Plague
In short, Shelley deserves your adoration. Which brings me to my point: Shelley is now competing for a $10,000 scholarship to be given to the best academic blogger on the web. She’s got 1006 votes so far, which is pretty good.
Unfortunately, she’s still being soundly beaten by the loathsome and evil Jess Kim.
Jess Kim seems like a nice and popular girl, but she’s obviously totally whoring for the votes she’s getting. Her blog is pap: she’s done less than 60 posts since she started her blog over two years ago, and her posts have titles like “Spoiled Milk” and “OMG Snow.”
If this scholarship was being decided based upon who could put on a bikini and make out with the other for the longest amount of time, I’d be content to deliberate between Jess and Shelley a bit longer. But given this contest is all about blogging prowess, it’s clear that Jess Kim is the Antichrist, and the way she’s going, she’s going to cheat Shelley out of a much deserved scholarship, not by dint of being the better blogger, but because she’s got the bigger MySpace friends list.
We need to stop Jess Kim. In the marketplace of blogging, posts about monkey-to-human testicle transplants should be financially rewarded while rambling posts about MIT snow days should be reviled and spat upon.
Please, click the link below and vote for the wonderful, dollsome and brainy Shelley Batts while simultaneously sticking it to the loathsome Jess Kim. Do science a solid.
Note to Jess Kim, if you’re reading: Look, don’t feel too bad. None of this is to say I wouldn’t make out with you, if given the opportunity. But Shelley would have to spit in your mouth first.
Vote For Shelley Batts [College Scholarships]

Wow! That is the most interesting and amusing endorsement I’ve received BY FAR. Thank you so much for your help. I was beaten out of this thing last year, and I really would like to show the science blogosphere that I’m not a two-time loser. At least on my blog. This month.
Anyway. Sweet. ~smooches~

I did it for Science!
I hope you get it this year, Shelley

For Science!
Plus, Jess Kim is apparently a fan of the Barenaked Ladies which certainly can’t be rewarded.

Anyone with an African Grey deserves my vote. My family had one when we lived in Nigeria, but it got some kind of creeping crud and died.
She was a really sweet bird.

Oh, and Shelley, your blog really is excellent.
Comment by Racerabbit — October 9, 2007 @ 2:25 pm
Kimberley klein is in the first position now…
Comment by camillomiller — October 9, 2007 @ 3:34 pm
Kimberly Klein is:
A: A mother - older adults going to college can get a shit ton of scholarships just for being OLD.
B: Some sort of boring cancer survivor, and just writes about how she is tired all day.
C: Wants to go to LAW SCHOOL.
D: Has a blog category about being a mother, but has chosen not to write about it.
E: Has started her blog in July and has had no more than 2 posts a month.
LETS GET THIS STARTED INTO A FULL FLEDGED CAMPAIGN!

Excellent blog. Just added it to the list of things I read regularly, then posted a link to this article on a message board that I sometimes go to along with a plea for the guy who runs it to buy an add at ectomo, since I first found his webcomic on table of malcontents anyways. At any rate I hope you win.

Holy cannoli, Shelley’s sprung into… shoot, that’s second place. But man, what the heck are the criteria for this list? There are good-looking blogs that I’m probably going to return to (retrospectacle, anthropology.net, Shane Lavalette) and some blogs that just happen to be written by students?
(Upon checking it out, it turns out that, yes, that was all you needed. But seriously, the MIT admissions blog? doubleyou-tee-eff?)
Comment by jeff n. — October 9, 2007 @ 6:07 pm
Yes, PLEASE let’s turn it into a campaign. I have nearly exhausted all my ideas for link-grubbings, can you kind folks suggest more that I can do?
Comment by Shelley Batts — October 9, 2007 @ 6:24 pm
Voted, because African Greys rock, and for science, and because Shelley is cute, and because my brain slug told me to.
Comment by Julian — October 9, 2007 @ 7:00 pm
Everything that Julian said in his comment, plus the fact that Shelley blogs about Star Trek and People She Would Like To See Fight William Shatner. She got my vote.
She’s a COOL scientist!

Kimberley Klein is:
A: Not really all that old, and has received NO scholarships for being “old.” But she’d take one if there were such a thing.
B: IS tired all day, but that’s just because she’s in the middle of receiving wicked bad drugs to fight the cancer and has in fact written about one or two other things.
C: Is already IN law school.
D: Hasn’t added anything to the motherhood category specifically, and yet writes many posts about being a mother.
E: Actually started blogging in November 2004 but took her blog down because of a lack of time to write due to law school and motherhood duties. She decided to republish it in April just after her breast cancer diagnosis.
F: Me.

Well John, looks like a few commenters on my site (from elsewhere) didn’t appreciate your humor. Oh well, can’t please everyone. But I do, of course, appreciate your efforts and those of your readers.
All the bloggers are worthy, some just might have a more developed sense of humor than others (and Kimberly seems extremely nice and smart.) :)
Comment by Shelley Batts — October 9, 2007 @ 10:07 pm
Not all the blogs are worthy. I’m going to do a post on this every day until Shelley’s destroyed all competitors.

great blog.. i really enjoyed the monkey testicle post.
the comments on her post re. this article are quite amusing to read as well.. it’s funny to see some people have no imagination for satire.
Comment by rhys — October 10, 2007 @ 10:38 am
Ironic - calling Ms. Kim out on whoring for votes and then whoring for Shelley votes.
That said, I voted Kim Klein.
Comment by Dork — October 10, 2007 @ 11:59 am
Looks like one of those people with no sense of humor stopped by.
