This Giant Goddamned Crab
Posted by Eliza Gauger
The coconut crab, the largest terrestrial arthropod in the world. I deeply regret not knowing about these bony behemoths prior to leaving Japan; they are sold as pets there. Better than a Roomba by far, and easier to maintain. Forget yanking hairballs out of a spinning brush, all you have to do for your coconut crab is dispose of all your can openers, bone saws, wire snips, and gardening shears: the crab is easily upset by competition.

Pets? Really? Can’t they like… cut your hands off with their claws?

That’s a shotgun-worthy animal if I’ve ever seen one!
That is what nightmares are made of. This guy makes Cthulhu look like a warm, fuzzy teddy bear!

The picture is misleading. After reading the article it makes me want to have one as a pet, but the picture alone formed a mental image of some seaside community being terrorized by giant crabs. Just a pest, getting in the garbage, chewing up housepets, but no one got up in arms until the Johnsons left their stroller unattended slightly too long.

Go for an after-dark walk in a grassy area in South Florida, and you will get a similar scare from the land-crabs there.
