Chinese Toy Factory
Posted by Ross Rosenberg

I’m struck by just how nonplussed these two seem; their pile of severed doll limbs laid out before them. I suppose once one has had to assemble them day in and day out for months on end, for meager wages, the novelty is bound to wear off.

i think they may be suffering from a lead chemical by-product induced stupor.
that, or they’re both really into thighs and asses, and this is their ironic hell.

Ross your right. 7 days a week, 12 to 16 hours and day at 10 cents per 1000 unit, how would you look? Question. Does octosquid art and prose degrade these essentially slave worker even more. Hey, how about some Holocaust pics? “Nonplussed” looks and “thighs and asses” abound in stacks.
Ross, I know I’m overreacting. The system that made this candid pic possible is just one tiny step away from “work makes you free.”
Understand this…the PRC would put EVERY reader of this great site (and these two laborers) into ovens in less than a heartbeat. War is often subtle, especially at the beginning. Poison your pets, contaminate your children, hack your computers, and weaken you as unobtrusively with as many destructive tentacles as can be mustered. I’m just saying.

Hm… not anywhere I see credits for the photographer of this series. His name is Michael Wolf. and his website at photomichaelwolf.com… who knows Chinese toy story is a bit different…
but wait until you check out the 100X100 photo essay. Where Hong Kong dwellers define themselves (and fit all the stuff they own) in their very small apartments.

I don’t think you know what “nonplussed” means.

I was unsure as to whether or not to comment here but Dan Geiser’s comment has forced my hand. So, here goes, briefly:
First off, Dan, it’s not that I don’t know what “nonplussed” means it’s that I am a bad writer. I think they look perplexed, as if they can’t understand why someone would want to take their picture. That said, perhaps I should have communicated that in a fashion such as: “I’m struck by just how nonplussed these two seem at having their picture taken…” As one pedant to another, I thank you for pointing out my shortcomings! ;)
Tek - Yeah, I did not see an artist reference but Mr. Wolf’s site is incredible and the photos in 100 x 100 are beautiful. Thanks for the link and I’ve updated the post accordingly.
Lastly, Lazzi Mann - Let me say that I felt that I had achieved the right level of irony with this post. I’m sorry that you found it to be offensive as it was certainly not my intention.

Ross, I didn’t find it offensive. It just rang my alarm bell. Lastly, I thought he was saying that I didn’t know what “nonplussed” means. Heheheh…

Not sure what you mean by nonplussed. Nonplussed means utterly perplexed, flabbergasted, surprised, discombobulated. It comes from: “unable to go any further” i.e. no (non) + plus = no further. These two seem hypnotized, dazed, but definitely not nonplussed.
