Mortal Kombat: Gene Krupa Battles Buddy Rich
Posted by John Brownlee
Unlike the heavily balkanized commenter on YouTube, I am not really rhythmically versed enough to tell you who wins this drum battle between Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. All I can tell you is that these guys, armed with a pair of chopsticks, could make gelatin out of a human skull within seconds.
Also starring Sammy Davis Jr. As EDUCATED, the Educated Negro.

According to my Dad:
“I’m afraid that Buddy wins — too bad, because Gene was the real revolutionary who defined jazz drumming.”

Krupa won– showing his amazing control and the deep expression of which he was capable, using nothing but a set of drums. By the way, you should stop knocking Sammy Davis Jr. He was one of the good guys and a brave pioneer. Boy this film brings back what was the essence of cool around 1962: plain gray suits, narrow ties, an ‘ivy league’ haircut. I tried to look just like that.

if you ask me, i think EVERYBODY there won. ^_^
if i were in the same room as Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa, i think i would have an aneurysm.
“Mrs. Bowser, it appears all the damage is confined to the pleasure centers of his brain. Strangest case I ever saw… except this one fellow who was at the Great Unholy Novella Competition Finals; a face-off between Lovecraft and Howard…”
