Announcement: Cthulhu Cthursday “Goes Like This” Contest Winners

Posted by John Brownlee

After two weeks and 22 entries, we’ve finally picked our winners for our Cthulhu Cthursday “Goes Like This” Contest.

Picking two winners was not easy: as far as we’re concerned, every single one of you deserves the honor of being devoured first when Great Lord Cthulhu comes slithering to shore, and a consolation prize of a Cthulhu plushie until that glorious day.

As we sat down to judge the contest, Eliza and I realized the daunting task ahead of us. What was our criterion to be? Many of you — Chesh, Stammell, Jones, etc.) had tried to game the vote with props like eye patches, goggles, fezzes and moutstaches. Others of you — like Jilder, Giannia and Nicole — were attractive women who might possibly be bribed into having sex with me if you won the contest. And others were small children, batting their big moon cow eyes, trying to garner the sympathy vote… as if we had any sympathy whatsoever for our filthy larval forms.

Ultimately, Eliza and I decided to each pick our own personal favorite. The two grand prize winners, after the jump:

Eliza’s Pick: King Surly Crab

King Surly Crab’s artful entry has everything. Burnished goggles burning brightly in the dark. A moustache. A bottle of booze. As Eliza noted, it appears that he is sitting next to a suspended fireball. The photo is, perhaps, a smidge too dark, but that only serves to make it more Eldritch. Congratulations, Surly Crab!

John’s Pick: Shaan S.

Amongst all of the props and accessories that people used to increase their chances, none stood out so well as Shaan S.’s gray, skinny friend, which I like to think is the skeleton of Lovecraft himself. Great work, Shaan!

Honorable Mention: Sam (11) and Erin (7) Beesley

Okay, maybe we do have some sympathy for our filthy larval forms. At the last minute, Karen and Jim Beesley wrote us in with these adorable pictures of their kids, explaining.

My kids Sam and Erin (11 and 7) love the idea of Cthulhu Cthursday
(Cthupcakes and all), and demanded that we take pictures … sadly, the dog
was unwilling to pose with a sqid on her chin … we’ll keep trying once the
bites heal.

Against our better judgment and every synapse in our brains crying out in terror at the filthy germs that squirm across every inch of their pink, hairless bodies, we like these kids. They may not be able to beat me in a kick boxing match, but they’ve got style. We can’t in good conscience ignore these fine up-and-coming members of the Cult of R’lyeh. And Cthulhu Cthursday — with Cthupcakes! — sounds so awesome at the Beesley household, we’ve just got to send them something.

So congratulations on garnering the sympathy vote, Sam and Erin! You will each receive your own plastic, miniature Cthulhu idols, to lay at the foot of your bed and direct your nightly prayers towards.

Winners, please email me your addresses. To everyone else, thanks for entering: all of the entries were just awesome. We’ve still got a lot more Cthulhus to give away, so keep on trying! Honestly, we should probably manage to distribute a Cthulhu to almost every regular by the time we run out.

Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay!! Congratulations, guys! What a ripping set of pictures. I particularly like how Karen is giving that slightly anxious thumbs up. It’s eldritch horror that men where not meant to know, but it’ll be ooookay, right?

    “Cthupcakes.”

I’m going to be chuckling over that word all day. Or at least whatever equivalent sound I can manage what with your human vocal chords being so different & all.

    Cthookies, Cthupcakes, Cthallah bread…

‘Grat’s all. And about the kids…I’m only 17 and I hope my future kids turn out that cool. I mean, think of the projects one could achieve with children that didn’t think what Daddy was doing was weird - a front lawn Cthulhu Halloween setup, complete with miniature chanting Priest and Priestess, revolving around the body of a sacrifice tied to the stake… And of course, all the photo setups - with child actors, your Cthulhu cast only has to be a couple thousand time larger than them, not a full grown adult. Yeah, this is gonna be fun.

    “Cthupcakes”
has anyone noticed how phonetically similar “Catholic” and “Cthulic” are?

    Catholicism - Cthulucism

    maybe not so different…

Yup, congrats winners and weiners alike— this was fun and the first internet contest I or my cat had ever entered. We will try again, as she really wants a Cthulhu plushie to gnaw on and knock around the apartment, being a bit of an Eldritch terror herself.

Ah blast! Perhaps if I had WORN my goggles instead it would have worked.
