Noise du Jour: Obscure by Dir-En-Gray
Posted by John Brownlee

Eliza and I have been having a long running debate as to whether the Noise du Jour needs to actually be musically satisfying, or if it can just be a great video. We’ve come to no clear consensus, hence this terrible dong by Dir En Gray, a bizarre amalgam of black metal and a boy band. Drooling geeks, decapitated naked corpses and blood-gurgling geisha orgies… what more could you ask, except competence?

Obviously, this is not a music video but a video which has music in the background. Besides, japanese midgets in top hats have to be employed by someone, otherwise they roam the countryside in packs, terrorizing people like mad dogs.
BTW, why not allow both (great videos & good music) for noise du jour? Consciousness/consensus is never really necessary.

I’m going to have to defend Dir En Gray here. The first thing that has to be understood is that Visual Rock never died in Japan. It was taken to its logical conclusion. Thus you have hair bands that are VERY PRETTY. This trend is STILL popular, though in the east these bands are called “Visual Kei” bands. And… umm… yea I don’t enjoy Dir En Gray that much either. But there are other Visual Kei bands that are much better.
For music, go for Luna Sea, Kagrra or Janne Da Arc. For looks… go for Psycho Le Cemu (more of a Cosplay Band); especially the video for Prism. Just remember when you watch the video, they’re all male, even the pink one.

@Vinnchan It’s a Trap! lulz
my favourite du jour was Sonne, but i’m a fan of both the sound and the visual there.

I pity anyone who has a terrible dong.

The thing about Dir En Grey is that there are a lot of good Visual Kei bands… so there is no reason for their popularity here, as opposed to Moi Dix Mois for example. (I’m not really up on who else is still around these days — I think a lot of my favorites have broken up). Still, DEG are very pretty. I hope they can be the foot in the door for good Japanese music, but it probably won’t happen.

You lie. There are no visual kei bands that make music that justifies not muting their music videos.
I wish Japanese artists would take all this incredibly hyperactive (and sincerely impressive) imagery, and actually apply it to real content once in a while.
