Vij: Alone In A Church With A Dead Russian Witch

Posted by John Brownlee

Another film to add to my immense “must rent” pile, Vij is based on Nikolai Gogol’s story about a young Russian priest who must preside over the wake of a young witch, which requires him to spend three nights alone with the corpse. The film was made in 1970 and some of the special effects here are stunning. Pay particular attention to the fantastic creature designs at the end, some of which would still look progressive today.

This is a true masterpiece. The pacing of the film and the tension it delivers in stages is really expertly done, and the art design is just the jewel in the crown.

Pretty good for the 70’s fx and stuff, plus that chick was a hottie. Makes me want to take a trip to St. Petersburg for a month long trist.

Man, and I’d assumed that the remake was going to be much more over the top than the original.

All hail John B. for showing us this gem! Shows that music, editing, art, and a good story beats a billion dollar budget and CG any time.
