Amy Crehore Does Lolita
Posted by John Brownlee

The lovely Amy Crehore has painted two pictures inspired by Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita for the Literartistry group show. When I first caught wind of this project, I was worried that Amy might not be able to cram any monkeys into the painting, since the source material — for all its genius — is deplorably primate free. But, duh, I needn’t have worried… Amy found a way. All is right in the world.

My town had a small claim to fame with Vladimir Nabokov’s “Lolita.” The “Monkey Boat” at Mesker Park Zoo here in Evansville, Indiana was mentioned in the novel. At the time, it was a huge wooden boat surrounded by a moat full of monkeys. It was closed over a decade ago though.
I have never read the book, so I’m not sure why the Monkey Boat was mentioned since apparently the work is devoid of the primates.
