The Horror of Japan’s Severed Mouth Woman
Posted by John Brownlee
The video recounts the well-known story of the severed-mouth woman (kuchisake-onna), a malicious blade-wielding lady with a slit mouth (which she keeps hidden behind a surgical mask) who is bent on cutting open the mouths of strangers. Apparently a modern interpretation of an old Heian period legend, this tale sparked a mass panic in Japan in the late ’70s and early ’80s, as news reports circulated about a slit-mouthed woman terrorizing neighborhoods across the country. In this video, produced more than two decades after the hysteria passed, a former coroner comes forward with details about the severed-mouth woman’s identity. Using old skeletal records, her head is reconstructed here.

Okay, let me see if I get this right…
They were able to reconstruct her mouth from the skull?
There I was all believing and really into it, and then the end comes and I realized I got pranked…
almost as scary as those darned lesbian internet gangs that lurk in bathrooms….

You’re right, that is a little far fetched.
Gotta hand it to them, the way the music started building towards the end, just before the reveal, I was almost expecting the video to end as a screamer.
And the eyes almost seemed to move for an instant just after the lights came up.
Obviously they were going for cheap thrills.

As soon as they said they were going to reconstruct it from the skull, I got it.

Do you know which show this is? I seem to remember Takashi Miike being involved in some pseudo-documentary tv series about the paranormal back in the late 80s or early 90s. Supposedly one of the episodes from that series was the inspiration for Ringu and the whole J-horror phenomenon (which he then reused into One Missed Call) but I don´t know if this clip is from that.

Well , at least she had great teeth . She probably was a non-smoker.
She looks like the anime woman that terrorizes the child in the first part of the video.

If Miike was involved in this somehow, it would definitely explain one of his characters having the same facial modification in his film “Ichi the Killer”. Pretty interesting stuff…
