11 COMMENTS ARE NOT ENOUGH

the ironic conceit on which this video is built really hasn’t aged well

It wasn’t supposed to age well, I think. Videos like this are just that, a gift to those people remembering ages past fondly enough as to smirk at parodies like this. And the fact that it doesn’t take itself as seriously as say, “Knights..” below, only sweetens the experience..

Still my all time favorite video. When the subject comes up, this is always the one I refer back to.

Although 30 Seconds to Mars makes some humdinger videos too.

We must remember that this video was made far before retro-ironic was popular. It wasn’t even ironic, it was just low-budget and bad and totally self-aware, and that was awesome. Still is.

First, 70’s retro-ironic was quite popular by the early 1990’s. Second, retro-ironic was popular in the 80’s too, except that in those cases, it looked back not to the 70’s, but the 50’s.

That said, I still think these 4 minutes make entire (quite good) shows like Life on Mars feel a bit redundant.

The Beastie Boys have been pioneering 70s retro irony since the 80s. Paul’s Boutique is the Sistine Chapel of 70s retro art.

    Hm, what version is this..?

-At the “whaaah” the knifeman is supposed to fall off of the bridge, and this is even later than the also-not-seen knife-waving/duel/thingy.

Have you US people grown up with the “censored” version all along or is this a must-not-be-deleted-from YouTube thing? ;)

What’s ironic about 70s cop show pastiche? If you’ve seen (and loved) Starsky & Hutch, CHiPs, Mannix, etc. this movie stays as good as it was on the day Mr. Jonze committed it to film.

I wish I could be above retro-ironic conceit, but at least I don’t have a non-ironic nostalgic love for Mannix.

Where were we…? Oh, yeah. Cool vid.

Don’t know enough about this ironic conceit business to join the discussion, I just love this video. Most of their videos are pretty funny.

Especially the music video for Intergalactic. Dancing gaijin in construction suits coming out of giant mecha FTW!
