1500 Filipino Inmates Do Thriller

Posted by John Brownlee

The population of an entire Philippines prison re-enacts Michael Jackson’s famous Thriller video. 1,500 Filipinos jostling around like zombies, then breaking into spontaneous dance when they corner Filipino Michael Jackson and his transvestite “girlfriend.”

Honestly, I’m speechless: this is one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen on the Internet. According to the YouTube page, this is practice, not the final version. And if that’s not enough, they’ve done more.

Why the hell aren’t our own prisons trying something like this to boost morale?

“Thriller” as performed by inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center [YouTube]

I can’t believe they couldn’t have found a prettier boy to play the “girlfriend”.

The ponytail/balding combo really ruined the illusion for me. :)

It makes you wonder, if theses people put this much coordination and effort into an escape plan, they might really be a threat.

omg, i did not read the description below before i watched the vid and almost can’t believe when i saw the inmates’ uniform - it’s the detention center in the city where i come from! it’s one of the Filipino ingenuities, i should say. and it’s creative of them to give the inmates some recreational activity. and that “girl”! i have seen “her” in person years ago! “she” wasn’t that balding then. LOL
    thanks ECTO, for posting this!

I can just imagine the reaction of the guards on duty the day they all just decided to break out into choreography. And in the end the prisoners just go on their business like nothing happened. Guard goes home that night and is like “Honey, you’ll never guess what happened at work today…”

Dear freiends, imagine how hard they’ve worked to be able to perform it all without any errors. 1500 person in the PRISON?!?!

hahaha, What I’m sure about is that U.S. or Canada’s prisoners will never even be able to laugh or cry at the same time in a hundred years…
Wow man, I can’t understand why some people always say negative things instead of appreciating their job, it was a geart show.

US prisons do engage in organized spectacle, though of a very different sort. From domestic women’s prisons forcing prisoners to strip before a crowd and perform sex acts for guards, to the sexualized torture of US prisoners of war abroad. It seems US prisons interested in achieving something very different with spectacle then group morale.

The administrator of the Prison is good.

Why don’t we have this in America?

I know we could do better.

    Comment by Blue Bird — September 9, 2007 @ 5:10 pm

You bunch of raving idiots, if you had bothered to research this at all you would realize that these prisoners were forced to do this for the pleasure and exaltation of the prison warden. Many prisoners were beaten, tortured, and otherwise coerced in order to force them to do this performance. Of course we don’t do this in America and Canada, it is only possible through the use of what we deem cruel and unusual punishment. You unmitigated morons! This just proves how ignorant Americans are.

this really is a brilliant idea…not only is it amazing to watch on YouTube, but it is also (more than likely) reducing reoffending rates. sure, it may seem like a waste, but boosting morale really does affect the minds of offenders. its effective AND entertaining!
