isnt anything sacred any longer? ancient traditions are exploited to sell products. its kind of mildly offensive even though those arent my traditions. will consumerism ever die?

Actually, the dot has nothing to do with marital status. It’s typically used to represent the sixth chakra, or “third eye”. It can be warn by both men and women, but most commonly by women, and it’s as much a “fashionable” thing among Hindus as it is a symbol of faith.
But hey, perpetuate all the stereotypes you want. I’m gona go drink some beer and watch Hockey, eh.

Wow, I think that was our first “Actually…” comment.

Actually, there is one Indian commercial even better than this one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teWRV0hPu4c

Oh, and, while the bindi (or dot is guess) signifies the third eye, the commerical is correct in that, in traditional villages, husbands still apply it to their wives foreheads and legend links this practice to long life.

Wah wah wah, if you don’t like it, don’t buy the product. Don’t watch the commercial. But get over yourself. I like how any white stereotype can be perpetuated as much as people want to, but as soon as its another culture, FOUL!
The company that made this commercial didn’t use the Indian culture because they wanted to make a mockery out of it, or make fun of it, but rather because they think people will take it seriously. Up to the point where the husband wakes up, who is laughing?

Dude, I was just sayin’. You know, impart a little knowledge. Let people in on a trivial little factoid just for the fuck of it. Exercise a little masturbatory intellectualism. Isn’t that what blogging’s all about?

nice commercial. not bad.

[…] Eliza Gauger thinks so. But why take her word for it, judge for yourself. […]

Great find Eliza. I hadn’t seen the ad yet on TV here (India). Will spread the word.

I couldn’t understand some parts of this article o.us poetry, but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.

By Greatest ‘Indian’, you meant Ads made in English , for a predominantly national market, right?
