Khoda

Posted by Ross Rosenberg

“What if you watch a film and whenever you pause it, you face a painting?”

This question was the inspiration for Khoda, a film by Reza Dolatabadi. Consisting of 6000 paintings and taking over two years to complete the results are pretty impressive and yet, I can’t help but wonder just what was trying to be achieved. Doesn’t any frame of animation fulfill the requirements set forth above or is there more at play here? By “painting” does Dolatabadi mean just that paint was involved, or is it a matter of composition or technique?

Perhaps I’m simply being pedantic. Regardless, it does little to detract from the film as a whole.

The Moon Eater

Elizabeth Henry’s series of illustrations inspired by a nightmare she had in which a giant cuttlefish devoured the moon. I love pieces like these because — like a good children’s book illustration — they maintain that delicate balance between lightheartedness and menace.

“Artists today think of everything they do as a work of art. It is important to forget about what you are doing – then a work of art may happen.”
