Noise du Jour: “Umbrella” by the Baseballs
Posted by E. G. Gauger
Much like our advertising champion and fellow surrealist, Ryan Q. North (Dinosaur Comics), I’m a sucker for out-of-genre covers. Lick the Tins’ “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” and Tatu’s “How Soon is Now” are both favorites of mine, despite their filthy betrayals of the original songs. Frankly, there’s no point covering anything without making significant changes.
That’s where the Baseballs come in. They’re certainly a one-trick pony sort of outfit, but their one trick is finely-honed. The charm in these three young men is undeniable.

I made a mixtape, way back when they still existed, labeled Cover Me Baddd. The requirement was that the cover should offend those who were too religious about the original.
I recommend:
Purple Haze by the Cure
Iron Man by the Cardigans
Stairway to Heaven by the Beatnix
to start.

Alanis Morissette’s cover of My Humps is brilliant.

Delicious, I had to bite my fist (an act usually reserved for your mom).

I’m glad to see Elvis’s tradition of ripping off African American artists is alive and well.
Seriously great cover though.
As for TATU covering The Smiths? Two wrongs don’t make a right.

Any chance you’d like something as horribly mainstream as Johnny Cash’s version of “Hurt”? I’d say that’s one fairly out of genre version as well.

thanks a bunch Eliza :-( ….that cost me £7.99 to buy a album by a band I’d never heard of, until you embedded the song in my head so I couldnt shake it. You may be on the verge of becoming an expensive habit! ;-)
