Deja Vu

On the left, Conor and Fintan MacCormack demonstrate the MCOR Matrix 3D printer, supposedly a huge leap in 3D printing technology due to its ability to print flexible hinges and its usage of paper as a source material.
On the right, Tom Kilburn stands next to the Ferranti Mark 1 computer in 1950, notable for being the machine on which the earliest known recording of computer music was made, and for which the one of the earliest computer games was created. The song was a medley of “God Save the King”, “Baa Baa Black Sheep”, and “In the Mood”. The game was Chess.
Be patient, friends, the future is nigh as fuck.

and thus as the dawn of a new age shall rise.
humanity is dust, the world of the printer is now!
weep in the four color bliss of tomorrow!

Now you could remark that if it took 50 years to go from that to cheap, portable computers doing a proper job in those areas (mp3 players, game consoles), it might take another 50 years to develop cheap and effective 3D printers. Fortunately technology’s progress grows exponentially (one of the reasons is that we use our new tools to create even better tools even faster).
…and here I am, responding to a question nobody asked.
But the future sure is nigh!

@Teutates: It’s something I considered. The speed with which computers have shrunk tangibly, and expanded technologically, in comparison to similarly revolutionary technological advances throughout history makes me visibly ecstatic when I think about what that means for the development of 3D printers.
Toner cartridges are still gonna cost an arm and a fuckin’ leg, though. Just you wait and see.

Even more, probably. They’ll be some sort of plastic or whatever they’ll use.

What about items that can’t be made, like MC Escher’s drawings. That printer would get so pissed if it had to make something like that.

[...] 3D Printing. Or fabricators, as they’re being called in some circles. 3D Printing is very cool (via Ectoplasmosis). [...]
