Quote Dis: Learn to Draw, or Get Out
Posted by E. G. Gauger
A gallery owner (I won’t say who) tried to tell me how great someone’s brushwork was, and he really had no clue about what constitutes “good brushwork.” Folks, there is a significant difference between having a strong style that exaggerates anatomy, and exaggeration because of a lack of anatomical knowledge. I’m not saying I’d like to see all things painted realistically or naturalistically, but I would prefer that the artists know how to draw something, at least. I’ve seen so many artists whose drawing was so bad I can’t believe they got shows.

My brushwork brings all the boys to the yard.

I am reminded of the movie “My Kid Could Paint that”

That movie blew my mind. The smugness of the super-realist art dealer…the frustration of the modernist father…man oh man.

i have always considered myself as a doodlist more than an artist, seeing as how most of my technique (if you want to call it that) was learned in highschool while binge drinking, getting high everyday and dropping acid between classes. somewhere between all this i learned to draw (not very good) but still I go to art classes and am guilty of having moments where my inability to draw is mistaken as “creativty” and im guilty of not calling my own bullshit on it. from now on im going to. thanks ectomo!
