The Strange Worlds Of Sidney Sime
Posted by Ross Rosenberg
“They’re Little Girls And Boys!” by Sidney Sime for the poem “Zagabog” from the book Fancy Free by Eden Phillpotts. Sime was most famous for the illustrations he did for the Irish fantasy writer Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, or Lord Dunsany. H.P. Lovecraft was a great fan of both Dunsany and Sime, whose influences show themselves often in his work.

I absolutely adore Sime. I first discovered his illustrations in my favourite book, “The Gods of Pegana” by Dunsany. I wish his work was more accessible so I could get wall-sized prints to decorate my home.

Yikes. The packed-in composition and googly-eyed monsters remind me a bit of Hieronymous Bosch.

It’s as if Dr. Seuss and Terry Gilliam had a secret love child in the past before both of them ever existed. It’s so maddeningly awesome that it’s just…maddeningly awesome…those images will now rend my mind forever…

I discovered Sime after doing a paper on Harry Clarke. At the time I only gave him a passing glance of my time and the illustrations I did see weren’t as fantastical as this. That is just GORGEOUS. Now I can see why Clarke and the aforementioned were so impressed. Thank you Mr. Rosenberg.

Excellent details. Reminds me of Nick Blinko and Aubrey Beardsley smashed together.

Usually I do not post on posts, but I would like to say that this site really forced me to do it! Thanks, very good post. They claim that these are just exceptions that affect one or two customers here and there, and those are for good reasons, if you look for them.
