Socotra, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, is unlike any on Earth, playing host to a number of endemic flora and fauna. Witness the dragon’s blood tree (Dracaena cinnabari), its gnarled branches forming spidery canopies, making the trees resemble giant, alien fungi; or adenium obesium, the desert rose, a squat, gray tumor of a plant, its finger-like tendrils reaching, imploringly, towards the sky. It is a landscape that brings to mind a real life Kaddath.

Seeing those pictures makes me wonder if the Bethesda designers in charge of the Shivering Isles expansion took some inspiration from earth’s more unusual places.

    Bethesday usually gets it right.

So that is where the desert rose comes from. I have one of these in my yard but never new the story behind it.
