Welles At Work
Posted by Ross Rosenberg
Behold, a corpulent and besotted Orson Welles attempting to pimp Paul Masson champagne. His second take is by far the best when, upon rousing himself from what appears to be a deep meditation on where he finds himself at that moment, he lets loose with the wonderful “Maaaa-haaaa, the French… champagne’as… alwaysbeencelebratedforitsexcellence…”
Regardless of Welles’s intoxicated mumbling, the commercial was eventually finished though, one assumes, on a different day. It is well known that towards the end of his life, Welles was doing commercials for peas and the like, seemingly, under duress. It is a shame that the man who created one of film’s finest accomplishments would wind up a punchline, regardless of how funny it is.

I remember that commercial when I was a kid…who’s that fat guy, Dad?
Oh, a washed up old shill.

I remember as a kid watching The Critic and in the show Welles did a video will, a Blotto Bros. wine ad and more popularly a Rosebud Frozen Peas ad. It’s funnier and less sad when it’s a cartoon and not even him. :P

“And rich green pea-ness… Wait! That’s horrible! I’m not going to say that!”
