Noise du Jour: “Coffee” by Aesop Rock (Featuring John Darnielle)

Posted by Ross Rosenberg

Just in time for Halloween comes the schlocky and over-the-top video for Aesop Rock’s “Coffee”, from the album None Shall Pass. I’m a big fan of Aesop Rock’s earlier work but his most recent efforts have been less than stellar (I’m looking at you Bazooka Tooth). However his newest, while not up to the standards of, say, Labor Days, was enjoyable with this track in particular being a highlight.

10 COMMENTS ARE NOT ENOUGH

I was going to suggest None Shall Pass as a NDJ, as the animation in the video is absolutely lovely, but this one is clearly more appropriate for today!
Also, I really must check out some of his older albums, as I’m madly in love with this one and having trouble imagining it much better.

Labor Days is one of my favorite hip-hop albums. Both Float and Appleseed are excellent as well. You will not be disappointed.

John Darnielle should definitely be featured in more hip hop.

Labor Days is also an all time favorite of mine and I totally agree with you on Bazooka Tooth, which is why None Shall Pass caught me totally by surprise. I got a hold of it a few days ago and have been listening to it non-stop since.

I read Darnielle’s name when I first got the album and didn’t recognize it. Upon hearing the song, though, my girlfriend asked “Hey, isn’t this the guy from The Mountain Goats?” Sure enough…

So my question to those of you who are more well versed in the man’s catalog then I: what are your recommendations?
