The Dream of the Husband of the Fishmonger
Posted by Qais Fulton

Scientists have discovered a new species of octopi with an undeniably human looking orifice. Were I the type of man to indulge in such pedestrian activities, I’d make a joke about receiving oral sex from the thing. The octopus featured is even female. Honestly the set up couldn’t be better.
Thankfully this humor-ripe sea dweller is only about 25 mm making such a joke not only stupid but highly self deprecating. Unfortunately, that means my performance art reenactment of Hokusai’s “The Dream of the Wife of the Fisherman” is now likely to go unrealized.

Trust me, you don’t want to get up close and personal with a beak, unless you are a dedicated masochist. Do. Not. Want.

This makes me envious of the celphalopod dental plan.

This is promachoteuthis sulcus. As squid expert Dr Steve O’Shea (to whom The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets newest album “The Shadow Out of Tim” is dedicated) says:
“No [teeth there]. Just something weird happening with the buccal bulb musculature (surrounding the beaks). The exposure is a bit low so I can’t honestly tell whether the beaks are still in there (there’s very little damage to the buccal membrane, so I guess that they are). It would be so cool to have a squid with teeth! These (muscles) look more like dentures.”
SCIENCE!!!
