Saturday Morning Cartoons VI

Posted by Ross Rosenberg

Broadcasting straight from the sticky, jelly-like center of Ectomo comes Saturday Morning Cartoons VI. Open up your eyes and allow the tubes to massage your brain-meats.

Aeon Flux: Gravity – The first Aeon Flux short I ever saw. It was love at first sight.

Aeon Flux: Mirror – Another of the shorts from Liquid Television and the only one, if memory serves, where Trevor is responsible for Aeon’s demise.

The Tick: The Tick vs Chairface Chippendale – A classic in every sense of the word. One of the best cartoons ever to be shown on a Saturday morning. “You’ve ruined everything, you terrible rabbit person!”

Rockfish – An astounding piece of CG animation from Blur Studio and director Tim Miller featured in The Animation Show.

Home Movies: Everyone Is Entitled To My OpinionHome Movies is one of the funniest cartoons ever. Ever. I mourn its passing every day. “Interim!” “I heard that. Bastards.”

Pinky & The Brain: Yes, Always – I love this episode with Brain acting exactly like his voice’s inspiration, Orson Welles. “Shakespeare wrote my best material, you write drivel unfit for a lightbulb commercial.”

• He-Man Sings: Fabulous Secret Powers – And now for something completely different. “Hi there! I’m Adam, Prince of Eternia. This is my kitty Mr. Cringerpants, the most cutest kitty in the universe.”

The Maxx: Episode #1 and #2 – “I don’t have a TV now, but that’s ok. The shows in my mind are almost always better.” Fond memories of The Maxx, from an age when MTV was still interesting.

Fifty Percent Gray – Second in my Animation Show series, a meditation on a soldier’s afterlife by Rauiri Robinson.

Bathtime in Clerkenwell – For the trifecta: Alex Budovsky’s infectious animation. You will be humming this all day. All. Day.

• A double shot of Looney Toons to wrap things up. First: Bewitched Bunny, a re-imagining of Hansel and Gretel. “Aaaa, your mother rides a vacuum cleaner!” Funny sidenote: Eliza also leaves a cloud of bobbing pins floating in the air when she dashes out of frame, which she does quite often!

• Lastly, Broomstick Bunny Another episode featuring Witch Hazel. The image of Bugs appealing to Hazel’s soft side, his eyes welling with tears, is priceless.

13 COMMENTS ARE NOT ENOUGH

One day I would love to know who was the brave soul who gave the green light for Aeon and the Maxx on MTV. What’s that guy/gal doing now?

The Pinky and the Brain segment is taken near-verbatim from an actual recording that Orson Welles did, complete with arguing over peas and proper words. I recall reading something about the Brain voice actor having already memorized it on his own.

Searching for ‘Orson Welles Frozen Peas’ will find recordings of it:

Woo Alex Budovsky! Great stuff. Wish I could find more of his work – the only other thing I’ve ever seen is an animation for (return I will to old) Brazil.

I read in one of Chuck Jones’s books that he decided to leave those bobby pins in the witch’s wake in response to Hanna Barbera’s habit of leaving air swirls behind their characters. He said if you were going to leave something like that behind, it should be more interesting than air.

Justin – That clip was awesome.

CJ – Yeah, I haven’t seen any other stuff by him but I’ll have to look around for that one.

A but of a tangent here, but my god does Ulysses 31 not have possibly the best theme song of all time?

The main force behind Home Movies, Brendon Small, went on to the show which is either called Metalpocalypse or Dethklok. Maybe it would scratch your itch?

[...] that’s not enough cartoon for you, check out this youtube playlist by ectomo. And just like Malvin says, start at the top of the list – the very first Aeon Flux short. [...]

Emily – That was pretty cool. I’ve never even heard of that one.

jim – Yeah, I like Metalocalypse but I don’t love it. The rest of the gang behind Home Movies is doing a show now called Lucy: Daughter of the Devil which, with the exception of the pilot, has been hilarious thus far.
