Cthulhu Cthursday: Ghostbusters vs. Elder Gods
Posted by John Brownlee
We posted this before on Table of Malcontents long before the advent of Cthulhu Cthursday, but Robin L. has been so furiously ectotweeting it that we’d be amiss not to repost it, so here it is again: “The Collect Call of Cathulhu”, an episode of The Real Ghostbusters cartoon in which everyone’s favorite ectoplasm exterminators battle Lovecraft’s Elder Gods.
As we wrote on ToM:
Outside of misspelling ‘Cathulhu’, I think they did a pretty good job adapting the mythos to a kid’s cartoon show. It’s worth watching if only for the first two minutes, which features this exchange:
“I tell you, Ashton, no good can come of this! Putting the Necronomicon on display like this is dangerous.”
“Nonsense, Kline! Maybe up in Arkham they still believe in spooks, but here in the Big City we’re a bit more sophisticated. Your precious book of spells will be quite safe here, I assure you!” *wink*
Never trust a man who winks when telling you no harm will come from a Library reading of the Necronomicon Ex Mortis.

I loved this show and I still don’t understand why they haven’t released full seasons of this on DVD yet.

I’ll be honest, once I tweeted it last night, I just realized that I had already done so a couple of weeks previous. My apologies! Had I remembered, I wouldn’t have done it.
That being said, growing up I loved the Real Ghostbusters and today while looking through some episodes it amazes me that they ever kept this on without some kind of parent group shouting about it. But then again, it WAS the 80s and I like using that as an excuse that allows almost anything to happen.
“It seems that the man admitted to being a necrophiliac in his youth.”
“Well it WAS the 80s.”
Alright…I think three days of no sleep is catching up on me. Time for this gal to sleep….

I watched a lot of The Real Ghostbusters (up to and including one that may or may not have left me with a lingering supernatural villain fetish) and I totally don’t remember that one.

I don’t remember it either. But then maybe that follow-up Slimer series has induced me to file it with other repressed memories, along with junior high school, and Steve Urkel.
